What to do with wedding bands after broken engagement
Hi. My fiance and I have already purchased my engagement ring and wedding band. The engagement has since been broken and we are trying to work things out. If we were to become re-engaged I would like for him to actually purchase a new ring and ask me to marry him again, rather than us just getting back together and me throwing the old ring back on like nothing happened. We broke up because of some huge mistakes that he made. The only reason that I am placing the blame on him is because I want you to understand that when I look at these rings I will automatically think of that situation and how much pain it caused me. I do not think that I am being spoiled or rude and we certainly do not have the money to just throw away. However, I want this to be a fresh start for the two of us, not just some on again off again relationship, which is what it feels like to me if I just put back on the same ring. Anyway, I guess what I am asking is if this is wrong of me and how do we go about doing this? Will most jewelers take a ring back as a trade in, or an upgrade to a new one? I wore the engagement ring for about a year and the wedding band has obviously never been worn. I hate to just take them to some pawn shop or something. This seems tacky and I am afraid we will lose a lot of money on the bands. Thank you very much for your help!

That is a good question. Although it is tempting to say "just deal with it" and save the money, it is also at the same time understandable that such a strong symbol that you will wear for a lifetime should have positive feelings attached to it.
As far as the part of the question I can answer as a jeweler, it is unlikely that most jewelers would take a ring back after a year. Some jewelers, however, will take it back if it is being upgraded to a more expensive diamond.
This will largely depend on the jeweler you purchased the ring from and their policies can vary depending on several factors, such as how large of a jeweler they are, how much markup they have on their rings, and whether it is something they can refurbish and turn around again quickly.
There is no one single standard policy, and it would be unfair to expect your particular jeweler to abide by anything other than their stated and written policies.
