engagement ring - need some advice

Okay, I know what I would like to do, but not sure of how it would come across to my girlfriend. Too keep a long-story short, was married in 2000, 5 months later wife was killed in auto accident. 3 years ago, met wonderful woman whom I now live with and her two kids..engagement is the key topic of the time and I fully want to get engaged and marry this woman (have been sure for a year or so now)....my dilema...

I kept my previous wife's wedding ring, a beautiful 1+ ct marquis diamond with baggets, etc...its valued at over 14K. I am currently unable to purchase a new ring for my ever-deserving girlfriend and wanted to take the stone from the previous ring and mount it on a different setting.

I plan on fully talking to my girlfriend prior to doing anything, because utlimately it is up to her and how she feels about it. I personally want to give her the best and show her that she means the world to me...the ring to me represents everything I believe in regards to marriage, commitment, etc. But I also understand why she wouldnt want it remounted.

I am looking for advice/comments on what I could expect from my girlfriend and/or ways to help put it in the right perspective.

thanks in advance.

I'm sorry for your loss and I'm certain your fiance is a lovely woman but I doubt she'll want the same stone. A better idea would be to sell the setting and stone to a jeweler and use that money to buy an entirely new ring.
