     engagement ring

I am going to propose to my girlfriend, but I want her to be able to choose the engagement ring together with me. Is it unusual to propose without a ring?

Some people do propose with having the engagement ring in hand. You might want to come up with something clever like something I saw on tv yesterday (the man made a ring of 3 "knitted" carrots, get it...carrots - karats..LOL). It doesn't have to be something funny like that though, it could be a single rose with a love note attached. Anything you could present her with while you ask would be great.
