     heirloom engagement ring woes

hello, so my mom purchased an engagement ring for my grandmother when she got her first job (they were very poor, and i dont think my grandma had one).. when grandma passed away my mom got the ring back and has been wearing it ever since (about 10 yrs).. my mom got very sick (close to dying) early this year, and during the scare she was told to get all of her affairs in order... she got better, and eventually (two months ago) told me how bad it really was.. she then showed me this ring and told me it was mine if i wanted it, when the time was right.. the time's right,but.... i'm not a fan of the ring.. i know she'll love it regardless, i'm just wondering what my options are?

Dear Options,

If it were a wedding ring, it would have been fine. But, there is some strange etiquette reason (I don't get it actually) why we are not supposed to use our mother's engagement ring. You probably would be all right with it since your mother bought it and it was your grandmothers.

But, this is something you and your fiance should choose. If you don't care for the ring, don't wear it. Find something you two want.

Best wishes,
