     moms wedding ring or mine?

I was wondering if it was okay if I used my own engagement ring (I promise to wear it on the right hand) for my wedding. My mom has been divorced from my dad and my sister's dad as well. She kept the wedding/engagement rings for us when we got older. She is ready to hand mine over to me, but what will I do with it? I don't like the style nor would I wear it anywhere. Is it appropriate or disrespectful if I want to trade it in to get a custom-made wedding band for my ring or upgrade? Do jewelry stores even take trade-ins or would I have to take it to a pawn shop?
Unsure

Dear SoonEngaged,

You can choose to wear a ring your mother gave you as your engagement ring if you wish. Since she gave it to you, you can have it altered as well. For the rest of the question, it is best if you speak to jewelers.

Best wishes,

I would like to add that you should discuss this with your groom too. Some men have some really strong feelings about the wedding rings.
