which hand does the engagement really go on?

I got engaged this last Christmas and I have switched my ring from my right to left ,and now back to the right. That's where it started out. Then, as I wear the ring more (young people) are telling me it should be on the left hand. Then more, wise old people have got on me for wearing it on my left too soon. On which hand is the engagement ring worn? Please give me reason so when someone ask why I have good explanation.
