Since my wedding ceremony is strictly immediate family, my fiance and i have elected to have my (will be 13) niece as our wedding assistant. She will be basically be in charge of rings. I have promised her a dress, and wonder if giving a certain amount of money to her to buy a summer dress is appropriate? In the same vein, my nephew (will be 9) can't be left out so I have told him he can be an assistant photographer (will be armed w/disposable cameras). If I buy my niece an outfit, I have to buy him one too. Any thoughts? I think it would be a waste to rent a tux for him. Should I go with the idea of giving money to the parents and empowering them to find something suitable allowing myself to control the budget? The wedding will be outdoors on a B&B resort in June. I also plan to have my other niece (will be 2.5) and my son (will be 1.5) walk down the aisle prior to me hand-in-hand. I guess I should spring for my other niece's dress too? Again, donating $ to the parent, empowering them to purchase something appropriate? I'll likely have a simple white gown, and my fiance is planning on a suit (no tux). Any advice?

Dear Dressing the Children,

You are not expected to purchase the children's attire. So, anything you give is your choice.

Your nephew doesn't need to be dressed as an attendant. He won't be in the bridal party.

The flower girl's parents typically purchase her attire. Your son could wear a suit since your groom will be wearing one.

Best wishes,
