Heirloom Engagement Ring

My girlfriend long ago was given her Grandmother's engagement ring and she would like to use it has her own when the two of us get engaged.

What is the etiquette in this situation? I would like there still to be an element of surprise but for obvious reasons it's difficult under the circumstances. Do I ask her for the ring in advance so I can do the traditional "get down on my knee"?

Thanks in advance.

If you have access to anyone close to your girlfriend, say a roomate or family member, perhaps they could help you "steal" the ring if she's not wearing it. However, if she keeps it stored away but does look at it from time to time make sure she doesn't think she lost it.

You really don't have to slip the ring onto her finger or have the ring present to "get down on one knee to propose" though. Consider purchasing a single, perfect red rose and come up with something sticky sweet to say during the process of handing her the rose. Then the two of you could take the ring off for a cleaning and slip the ring on her finger once it's done.

Best Wishes,
