Wedding gift registry for civil ceremony with no guests?

My fiancee and I have wedding registries that are online. One is at Wal-Mart and one at Target. Is it appropriate to have a wedding registry since we are going in front of a judge to marry us and there will be no guests at the ceremony? Later that evening we are having a reception with family, friends and co workers to celebrate our marriage. I spoke to my mother about this and she suggested that we should not have a wedding registry since we are not having an actual ceremony. If any friends or family want to give us a gift they may. I just don't want to cancel out our wedding registry just to please my mother plus I don't want to insult any friends or family. What advice you may have for me?

Mother knows best -- in this case so true.

Wedding gifts are given for the wedding, not the reception, so please do not expect gifts. However there may be some who will want to send a gift anyway. So in this case, don't cancel the registries and, only tell those who ask where you are registered.

There will be at least 6 people present when we are saying our vows as the Judge performing our ceremony will need witnesses present. What would be the most appropriate way to say we have a registry to friends and family although there will be no public ceremony? Should I tell them in a informal note there is a registry they could look at.We do not want to upset and family or friends or we don't want to sound greedy.

Again, it really is not proper to tell your friends and family about your registry (unless they ask). My best suggestion would be to make a wedding website for yourselves and list all of your ceremony, reception and registry information there, listing the regostry information on an inside page. You can tell everyone about your website and, if they choose to look at the registry page, they can get the information for themselves.

Click here to see how to make your own wedding website.

Don't include this information with the reception cards because, as I mentioned earlier, gifts are not to be expected for the reception.
