Help!!! My nephew is scheduled to be married in less than a month. We received a wedding announcement in the mail, but no invitation. We are not being invited because we're not Mormons. My nephew was raised Catholic and is converting to Mormonism for his bride. Her parents have informed my sister and her husband (my nephew's parents) that they are not invited to the ceremony because they are not Mormons. They are very upset. Is this traditional Mormon wedding tradition? This sounds more cult-like than anything else. Why would they exclude any non-Mormon's from the wedding ceremony? As it is, the only family members invited to the wedding are my nephew's parents, brother and grandparents and I was told those invitations were given out reluctantly. Any help you can give me to understand this would be greatly appreciated!

In the Mormon religion, as in other religions, there are those who are fundalmentalist and exclusive, and others who are more liberal and inclusive.

I hope that your nephew has done the serious soul searching work truly needed for such an undertaking. If not, pray for him. Love him.

You DO have a right to express your hurt to him and to his parents. When doing this, however, be sure to keep it all about you---your feelings of hurt, your love and care for him. Refrain from judgment of any sort. Refrain from labeling.
Sadly, I work with many couples where family is alienated because of religious beliefs. It is my humble belief that Jesus came to unite not separate.

My prayers are with you.

Rev. Susanna
