I am attending a wedding at the end of October in New York. The service is at 3pm and the reception is at 6:00pm. Black tie optional was stated on the formal invitations. I have a lovely cocktail dress that is short in the front and long in the back and is a burgandy color with some beading. I think that it's perfect for the wedding....BUT...I've just found out from the bride that her bridesmaids will be wearing a merlot color. What should I do? Should I still wear the dress or get something else? I'm afraid the color may be too close to the bridesmaid's color. What is proper etiquette? HELP!! [unsure]

Can guest's colors be the same or close to bridal party?

Dear Burgundy,
All of these wines... Your dress may be too close in color, but it is difficult to know without seeing the dresses. A guest really shouldn't dress in attire that is close or the same as the bridal party. You'd be approached the entire time by guests assuming that you are a part of the wedding. So, it would probably be best to wear something else. It is too bad. Your dress sounds as if it would look awesome.
Enjoy your event!

Dear Guest,
The dress sounds great to me. As long as it is not the same exact cut and style, wear it and have fun. There are no etiquette precautions against any guest wearing the same color as the bridesmaids.
