It is a second marriage for each of us, and we have decided on a private ceremony with only our immediate families present. A wedding reception will immediately follow, to which about 60 guests will be invited. It will be an evening party with formal attire (I'm wearing an ivory chiffon and beaded evening gown) However, MY fiance and I do not want the affair to be too "bridesy." and want to avoid the traditional toasts, cutting of cake, bouquet toss, etc. However, we want the decor and atmosphere to be that of a wedding reception. Any suggestions? I thought perhaps instead of a traditional wedding cake, we could have a "cake" made up of individual petit fours or maybe a croquembouche. We are having a jazz combo, heavy hor d'ourves, bar, etc.

Dear Second Wedding Protocol,
All of your ideas are fine. You don't have to have any of the traditions if you don't want them. And, I love your idea for your 'cake'.
Just stay in the same mode, that this is more of a cocktail party celebrating your wedding, rather than a traditional reception.
Best wishes,

Thank you. In keeping with the spirit of a cocktail party celebrating our marriage, how would you word the invitations? I've used my former married name for many years and my fiance is an M.D.

It would still be a wedding reception invitation and it could look like this:
The pleasure of your company is requested
at the wedding reception of
You
and
Dr. Groom
Date
Time
Location
Black Tie Optional
RSVP
Address
Please read more about reception invitation etiquette. You will notice that there is an informal invitation that states 'cocktail' reception. But, that is considered more informal and yours is more formal. Choose the invitation that suits your event.

Hopefully the reception venue will lend itself to some good photo opportunities. Consider having elegant decorations for the wedding couple table, especially if you are planning on having photographs taken. Check with your florist about white easter lillies, and such, or other ivory colored flowers (roses) with deep green ivy accents.
The cake idea is great, and would make some nice pictures! Bon apetit!
