My fiancee and I are planning to have a small intimate wedding with family and a few close friends (less than 30 people, hopefully). However, we do plan on having a large reception (# of people unknown at this point) either later that evening or the following day. It was brought to my attention by a co-worker that if he is invited to the reception ONLY, then he is not "required" to bring a gift. What is the etiquette for wedding/reception gift giving?

Your co-worker is correct - gifts are given for the wedding - not the reception. However, many guests do send gifts if they are invited only to the reception - they are just not obligated to do so.
