Decorating reception hall without fluorescent lights

The reception hall at the church is lighted by many large fluorescent lights. What are some suggestions for making them less noticeable and using alternative lighting? There are some windows along one wall that are arched with sheer curtains. The wedding will be in the afternoon. Any ideas???

If you haven't done so already, you should first check with the church to determine whether you can do anything to alter the lighting.
In many halls such as this, the fluorescent lights are on a separate circuit from other lights and can be simply shut off. Any alternative lighting ideas, again, will be dependent on whether the church permits it. If they do, I suggest contacting a lighting professional in your area.

If you can't use alternative lighting, you might check to see if the church will allow you to hang colored gauze or fine netting, very light weight, from the ceiling that matches your theme. You could suspend from the ceiling and let droop below the lights to help diffuse and provide softer look. I have seen a lot of gyms use this effect and it is very nice. A few curled colored ribbons suspended from the netting would shift with the air flow and might provide a neat effect as well.
