I want to get matching bands and have each of us have a personal, short message engraved on the outside of the bands instead of the inside. When I asked about this in a jewelry store it sounded like it wasn't something that would work well. Should I consider something else because it would wear off too quickly?

Engraving on the outside of the band must be done by hand so you need to purchase the rings from a company that has the ability to do hand engraving and have the engraving cut deep into the rings so it will last a lifetime.The rings you want should be very personal and sounds like a very good idea. Don't let anyone change your mind.
