Proper guest attire for May Beach wedding

My BF invited me to a May wedding for his cousin. It will take place on a beach at 5pm. He doesn't have the invitation anymore or remember if it says formal/casual/etc on it. What is something safe to wear? Thanks.

The invitation doesn't typically state attire. Formal is the only attire mentioned. So, it is best to dress as if you are going to the nicest restaurant.
