Hello,

I am going to my nephew's wedding in Europe in August. The wedding is being held at a very old Catholic Church at 4:30 and the reception is at a castle that has been converted into a resort. The reception will last until 6:00 am. I've been told it's a formal wedding, but my nephew and his fiance have told all of us to dress as comfortably or as simply as we'd like. They want the trip to Europe to be as easy for all of us as possible.

I found a beige ankle length dress (picture attached). The top is a sleeveless scoop neck design made of satin and the rest of the dress is scalloped layers of some type of filmy material (possibly organza or chiffon with about 4 layers, it's not poofy). I wasn't sure if the style or color were appropriate.

Another option is a sleveless mid-calf black dress with a few beads. My concern is that it has some velvet design on the fabric. Is this appropriate for August?

I also found a sleeveless silk mid-calf dress with a short sleeve blouse in a watercolors print (pastel blues, greens, pinks and lavenders). This one I'm afraid is not dressy enough.

Can you help? These are just ideas of what I thought I could wear, should I wear a different type of dress? Thanks so much!

Dear Going to Poland,

Although, velvet isn't appropriate here at that time of year, your dress doesn't appear to be velvet. So, I think that is your best choice. It seems to bridge the gap between formal, but not too formal.

Best wishes,

The black dress is made of what I believe is velvet burnout. Is this appropriate for August? I also have a mid-calf, spaghetti strap black dress with a scarf hemline. What do you think?
