What to wear to boyfriend's family member's wedding

I am going to a wedding with my new boyfriend at the end of September. I have never been to a fall wedding and I will be meeting his family for the first time. I am wondering what would be appropriate to wear. I was thinking of wearing a simple black dress; any advice?

It is an evening wedding starting at 6:30, i am not sure how formal it is

I would assume that it would be cocktail attire. So, your simple black dress should be fine.
