Regarding wedding attire after 6 p.m.: I understand from the replies from the experts that the time, setting, etc. dictate the formality of the attire. But what exactly is it? My daughter says anything after 6 is always formal. I am invited to a 7 p.m. wedding that is being held at a church with a reception outdoors at the bride's parents' house. Nowhere on the invitation does it say formal, but my daughter says the bride says it is understood that the attire is formal. Do I wear a long dress and my husband a tuxedo? Thank you.

Dear Attire Confusion,
Not all affairs after 6 pm are formal. This is a misconception. They are usually 'more' formal than daytime events, but not always. A backyard reception creates an impression that it would be less formal. So, the bride could see many of her guests in jeans.
This is typically cocktail attire, which is the little black dress or its equivalent and a suit.
Best wishes,
