Renewing vows without clergy?

My husband and I would like to celebrate our 25th anniversary by renewing our vows at a luau anniversary party. We are throwing the party on our own since our children are still too young (13 and 11) to host such an event. We opted not to do the traditional "Silver 25th" party as we prefer to keep the celebration less formal.

The reverend that married us was an elderly friend of my grandfather, and unfortunately, he's passed away. During our original wedding ceremony, not only did we exchange traditional vows, the reverend allowed us to write our own vows to add to the ceremony also. We would like to renew those same vows that will be altered to fit our lives now and also mention the love we have within our family (both of our children are adopted). Would it be acceptable to renew our vows without a clergy member attending and to mention our children in our rewritten vows?

You do not need a member of the clergy or any paperwork for a vow renewal. What you're planning sounds wonderful.

Enjoy!
