Many, many relatives and friends

I've searched the postings and have not crossed this issue. We have many, many relatives and friends from across the United States with whom we keep in contact. Our daughter is getting married this summer. Her fiance and his family are in a similar situation with their guest list. Combined, we're talking well over 1,000 people. We would love to have everyone present for the wedding. But, we cannot afford a reception that would include everyone. And many of those people want to be present for the occasion. How do we handle this with the least expense? Also, both families are members of churches with congregations of 500+. We have been a member of our present church for 11 years, and know a large majority of the people. The fiance grew up in his present church, and knows everybody there.

I know that handing out invitations is considered ill-mannered. What options do we have to minimize cost?

Dear Be Correct,

This really is no different than any other wedding and the planning of it. Everyone has to work within their budget. Plus, today's weddings are more about the couple and their friends and close family, as they are supposed to be hosting it. So, only invite very close family and their close friends. Stay within your budget.

You could send family members a copy of the wedding ceremony on DVD if you wish.

Best wishes,
