Sending an email after the invitation?

We are having a small wedding (32 people) with mostly family and a few friends present. The ceremony and reception will take place in my brothers back yard (crossing fingers for good weather!). After I send out the invitations would it be OK to send everyone an email to give them further info? The wedding is at 4 p.m. but we'd like to invite everyone for 3 for a "pre mix and mingle". I didn't want to put this on our actual invitation. We'd also like to tell them that they are more than welcome to bring along a swim suit if they'd like to enjoy the pool later or just some comfy summer clothes if they wish. What do you think? An email OK, or tacky? Would a phone call be better?

This sounds like a lot of fun. Consider renting an outdoor tent. Even if there is no rain, it might be good sun cover for those not wanting the exposure or for the older folks.

You wrote that you will be sending an announcement but I think you meant invitation. [;)] If so, you could certainly include an insert inside of the invitation outlining all of your additional information. However, if this wedding is as informal as it sounds then your invitations could be just as informal. You could include a telephone number for RSVP and tell everyone about your plans when they call. Email is okay for correspondence but is not always reliable so it is not the best way to get responses and a head count. We just would not do this if the wedding were formal or semi-formal.

Thanks for the reply! We have considered the tent but decided against it as most of his back yard is pool and deck. It's a big enough house that we can all be inside comfortably if the weather is no good. But it won't be!!

I wasn't sending an email for a head count but rather for some additional info about the day that guests need to have. A traditional reply card is being included with the invitation. I like your idea of the insert in the invitation rather than the email though so I will go that route! Thanks very much!
