The bride has asked me to light the unity candle in plsce of her mother who is attending but does not support the marriage. The bride's mom and dad are divorced so I would be lighting the candle with her father (who is single now). I am married and my husband is fine with me lighting the candle. The bride used to babysit my children and I have been there for the bride since she was a young teenager and she often seeks advice from me. I have been helping the bride with coordinating the wedding. Would it be proper for me to accept this request?

Dear DS Doula,
Yes, it would be very appropriate if you feel close to her. Anyone could be involved in this.
Best wishes,

I'm wondering if the mother knows of this plan or will she be surprised and maybe even embarrassed? Even if she does not support the marriage, she is going to be present and everyone will know that she is being left out. It could be uncomfortable for all.
