After much trouble trying to decide on an engagement gift for my best friend's daughter (who lives in an apartment w/ her fiance and, has no room to store anything else), I decided on a bridal lingerie set (in ivory) as a gift. Her mom said, "isn't the mother of the bride suppose to buy the wedding lingerie?" I did not know of this tradition. Is this true? I have daughters of my own so I guess I should know this. Can't you have more than one special lingerie set? Please advise.

Dear Oldfashioned,
This is a very old tradition that isn't followed any more as our children are not as they once were--stay at home until marriage. So, it is fine. In fact, you really were not obligated to give her an engagement gift.
Best wishes,
