Hello,

I will be getting married in Mexico in June. Our intention was to have a civil ceremony in Mexico, however a judge will not be available. We have chosen to have a religious ceremony, however it is not recognized in the U.S. We have 50 guests attending the (wedding), and I'm not sure if I should inform them that we really won't be married on that date. Also, I don't know what to do about "really getting married". Should we do this before we leave or wait until we get home? My parents would like to have a post reception at home, at which time I would get married, but I'm not sure at this point. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what you can do if the ceremony won't be legal. To appear proper, you wouldn't want to create a wedding like event in Mexico if it is not indeed a wedding. It wouldn't be polite to host a 'wedding' in Mexico, which is a gift giving event, and not inform your guests that it isn't a wedding. To host a vow renewal would be proper if you are already married. But, these aren't typically viewed as positive when hosted so soon after a wedding. So, it may be best to host your wedding here where it is legal and invite your guests to it. Perhaps you could honeymoon in Mexico instead.

It is unfortunate you couldn't find a way to legalize a wedding performed in Mexico.
