This is my second marriage but my fiance's first. We have lived together for ten years and have one child together. His family is very small and mine is very large. We are all very close. We have decided to go to the justice of the peace and then, the following weekend, invite our families to our house for a party/BBQ. We would like to ask our guests to bring their favorite dish and the recipe instead of gifts. We are providing the hot dogs and hamburgers. Is this acceptable?
Thanks,
Karen Hobbs

How to word invitations asking wedding guests to bring food instead of gifts.

Dear Karen,
No, we never ask our guests to bring the party. Hosts provide the entire party. Plus, the wedding is the gifting event and guests are not expected to bring a gift to your reception. And, we never mention any type of gifts on the invitation.
Please host the party you can afford to host. Perhaps you could just have a cake and punch affair.
Best wishes,
