I know that I am not obligated to give a gift but, I have a friend who recently got married. It was at the courthouse by the justice of the peace. No one ws invited. This was her second marriage, his third. While I know I am not obligated, should I still give a gift? We our going out to dinner tonight with her and her new husband and am thinking that we would buy their dinner. Would that be enough or inappropriate?

You're not obligated to give a gift, but, if these are close friends and you want to give a gift that wpuld be very generous and, I'm sure, much appreciated. If you'd like to take them to dinner, call and invite them, telling them you want to take them to dinner to celebrate your wedding. That way, there is no question that you are paying.

If you choose to buy a gift, it doesn't have to be expensive. A keepsake is a nice thought.
