I was wondering what the etiquette is on inviting mothers to bachelorette parties. My bridesmaids are hosting a bachelorette party for me and have asked me for help creating the guest list. My future mother in law wants to attend. I was under the impression that it is inappropriate for mothers to attend this type of event and I am honestly rather uncomfortable with this notion. None of us want to offend or hurt her feelings. What should we do?

Dear Bride,

I think she has this confused with the traditional shower, where mothers are routinely invited. But, they are not usually invited to this type of party. Perhaps you could inform her that you have read that mothers are not invited and hope she accepts it.

Agreed. Mothers shouldn't be invited. This is a time for the bride and her friends to let their hair down and celebrate the bride's last night as a single girl. Most bride's wouldn't be comfortable cutting up in the presence of their future mother-in-law. Unless this is a very tame event, like going to a day spa, the mothers wouldn't feel comfortable either.

These are the groom's family members, so let him deal with them. Ask him to explain that mothers simply are not invited to these events and it is nothing personal. They can be invited to another pre-wedding party, if there is one.
