This may not be the best forum in which to post this question, but I couldn't find a better option!
My fiancé and I have asked a friend of his from college to officiate our wedding. Here is the issue: while his friend is a very nice guy, I am concerned that he may wear something tacky during the ceremony. I am not certain, however, if it is proper for us to give him some direction on what he should wear. My fiancé argues that we wouldn't tell a hired officiant what to wear (good point), but I would like to think that a hired officiant would wear something neutral. I have tried to make the case that we should at least ask him not to clash with the wedding party, but my fiancé thinks we are out of line to do so. I don't think that the officiant should have to match the wedding party, but at the same time I'd prefer that he doesn't wear a white suit with a neon green tie! I certainly don't want to step on his friend's feet, so my question is this: is it okay to request for him to wear a black or gray suit with a modest tie? Ultimately it isn't the end of the world if he looks goofy (we'll just laugh about it later), but it might alleviate some stress the day of!
Thanks in advance!

Actually, you would be fine to ask any wedding vendor what they intend to wear while performing a service. It's a fair question.

I agree. He may need to know how formal your wedding is anyway and may appreciate the guidance.

I often discuss what I am going to wear with my couples.
It is perfectly okay. You are not overstepping your bounds.
Blessings!
