Hi, We live in Vancouver, BC, Canada and are getting married this October. Does anyone have any suggestions on "how" to evaluate and hire a DJ. We really want the "right" person, but are finding the process difficult. DJs from clubs you can go and see them spin--but they generally aren't great for creating the "party" atmosphere. But wedding DJs are hard to evaluate as you can't really go see them at someone else's wedding!![shocked] Any thoughts would be appreciated. Peace[:)] Leanne

In this "digital age", many DJs and other entertainers provide video clips on either videos, CDs or DVDs. Contact DJs in your area and ask them to provide LIVE examples of jobs they've done. This gives you an opportunity to see them in "action". If you like a DJ's site or someone has referred one to you, ask the DJ to give you the name and phone numbers of wedding couples where they DJ'd. Don't hesitate to call and ask the couples "how did you like your DJ?"

Depending on your religious preference, consider calling some church or youth groups and ask them to refer you to someone. We've met several DJs who provide music solely for their congregations and were amazed at the quality of equipment, experience, and great personalities.

Most weddings have a wide range of guests, from children to the elderly, and you might want to think about the songs you DON't want played at your function. We had a client who provided a song list which included songs that we often REFUSE to play when children are present. The client had no idea that some of the songs she picked had "cuss words". Since she didn't know what was popular for a wedding reception, she had pulled the list from a website and had sent it to us as her playlist.

A lot of wedding DJs also provide entertainment at local hotel lounges, school functions, corporate parties, etc. Ask the DJ if you can attend one of their functions in the near future, just to see how they interact with the guests, voice tone, personality, etc. If they're good and if the function will allow, they will be more than glad to have you attend. If nothing else, you'll probably have a good time, get a few dances in, and look forward to interviewing the next DJ!
