Wedding Dress at Second Reception?

My husband surprised me with our wedding in December last year while we were living in Canada together. We were due the big white wedding this April, but due to family, it was changed.

I am English, he Canadian. It was a civil ceremony in a small chapel with his closest family and friends. My family and friends were not able to make it so my family is throwing us a second reception in the UK at the end of May. We are also having a Church Blessing and renewing our vows at the same time.

Is is appropriate for me to wear my gown again? Can I have my sisters as bridesmaids? I walked myself down the aisle is it appropriate for my Dad to walk me? I am really confused. I am not trying to stretch out the process, but my family wasn't there and I know they all want to see me in my dress.

Please help!

Dear MrsVanH,

The blessing of a marriage is supposed to be a small family affair, much like a portion of the weekly service. It isn't supposed to be a wedding. And, you haven't been married long enough to "renew" any of your vows. So, it should just be you two in front of a priest stating your vows. It shouldn't be a ceremony for your family to see you marry. That time has passed.

It would be better for you to just host a reception. This is most appropriate.

A wedding dress and all other wedding elements are not appropriate for wives. We have many other posts concerning this very issue. It might help to read them.

Rebecca Black has given you excellent advice. A marriage convalidation ceremony is not a wedding, since you are already married in the eyes of the state although not yet in the eyes of the Church.

However, you can have two witnesses at this ceremony. Bridesmaids (bridal party) are not appropriate nor is a wedding gown. If you wish your family to see you in your gown, by all means, model it for them privately and take lots of lovely pictures.
