If the Groom is wearing a tuxedo, should the groomsmen also wear tuxedos?

My fiance wants to buy a tuxedo for the wedding since he'll likely need it in the future. However, he wants to save the groomsmen money and have them wear suits. Our wedding is going to be a formal event, with the ceremony at 6:00PM. I think it is going to look strange to have the groom and the father of the bride in tuxedos and the groomsmen in less formal attire. Although they might also like to save money, I think they may feel uncomfortable if they are not in the same level of formality as the rest of the wedding party. Of course, I am also concerned about how this is going to look in our wedding photos.

Thank you!!

It is very generous and refreshing that your husband cares so deeply for his attendants but, the groomsmen should be dressed in the same attire as the groom. Most groomsmen expect to have to rent their attire when asked to be in a wedding so this shouldn't be a surprise to your groomsmen. Perhaps your groom can select a tux which, when rented, will be at the lower end of the price range in order to save some money?
