How far in advance to register

I was wondering how far in advance you are supposed

to sign up for gift registries.

Typically you would sign up for a gift registry anywhere from about 3 to 6 months in advance; before the wedding related parties such as the bridal shower and certainly before your wedding invitations are sent.
