We wanted to try to limit the alcohol so we had the idea of a cash bar or giving people a limited number of "tickets" with which they could redeem for drinks. I see reading other posts here that cash bars are a no-no. The reception will run from 6pm until late at night. Would it be okay if we didn;t serve alcohol at an evening wedding reception?

We are concerned about a few guests who don't know when to stop drinking.

Cash bars are not acceptable, however, you have the option to close the bar during dinner service for at least one hour. Consider also, serving only wine and beer to cut costs. Then it is also acceptable to close the bar one hour before the reception ends.

I completely agree. Providing non-alcohol drinks such as coffee and tea later in the evening is a very good idea. It tends to announce that it is time to stop drinking.
