I bought my wife an engagement ring that was 1/2 carat and had 1/2 carat worth of smaller diamonds on the ring. It was very pretty and I considered it a 1 carat ring. Now my wife is upset because my first wife had a 1/2 carat ring and says she told me that proper etiquette was for the second wife's to be bigger. I thought a ring with a 1/2 carat in a setting and 1/2 carat worth of smaller rings on the band was 1 carat. Am I wrong?

There is no such etiquette rule surrounding engagement rings. To measure one's love for another by the size of an engagement ring is ridiculous and petty. Sorry, but you asked. [tongue]

In fact, you really don't have to get a ring to get married. Your wife shouldn't be comparing any aspect of the old relationship with yours. Personally, I think your choice seems very generous and you seem to have given the purchase some thought. It's a shame your fiancee cannot appreciate the gift.

But is the ring I described considered a 1/2 carat or a one carat ring?

Hi,

A ring with a 1/2 carat center diamond and a 1/2 carat additional smaller stones equals a 1 carat total ring.

What your wife may be referring to is that the center stone should have been 1 carat total, which is much more valuable in terms of monetary value than a 1/2 carat center & 1/2 carat smaller stones.

However, I have to agree that measuring your love by the size of a diamond is petty. Clearly priorities have to be evaluated. There are so many real problems in the world, that having any diamond at all should be considered a true blessing.

Hope that is taken to heart.
