Dear Crissy:

Please tell your mother that Peggy Post, one of the foremost experts on etiquette, says that it is not polite to ask for gifts or specify what sort of gift you would like to receive. Gifts should never be expected and should be received with grace (and a thank you note!). If you'd like, you can get a copy of her book and show it to your mom, letting her know that you're sure she wouldn't want to embarass herself in front of her soon to be new family members.

She could register for a honeymoon gift registry and then spread the word that they have this registry through family and friends, but never on a wedding invitation. Gift registries can be mentioned on a personal wedding website or in a bridal shpwer invitation though.

If she still insists that she wished to have money let her know that you'll tell anyone who asks but that you cannot list her preference on the wedding invitation or tell those who haven't asked.

Good Luck!
