My daughter wants us to host an informal rehearsal dinner at our home. Would it be okay to ask guests to bring a dish to pass to help with the dinner?

No, this wouldn't be polite. The reason to host this event is mainly to thank these people for participating and supporting the couple through the wedding planning process. So, they shouldn't have to buy anything or spend time making anything. If the budget is tight, order pizza or cook hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill (weather permitting, of course). This is an informal event, so just food and entertainment is all that's expected of you. it doesn't have to be anything fancy - just fun and relaxing.

I agree with the previous post. The rehearsal is the bride & grooms opportunity to take time out to thank the people that are involved, not to ask them to provide food for a dinner in their honor. I've had lots of brides go with a casual event with pizza, beer and wine for the evening. Everyone is happy with the relaxing dinner and no one has to bring along the food, well except the pizza guy!

Well, that's what I thought, which is why I posted the question. This was my daughter's idea, and I just didn't think it was a good idea. Thanks for your input.

Don't be too hard on her, mom. At least she's not a spoiled brat who insists on hosting the rehearsal dinner in some grand location with fancy, expensive menus. :o Keep modeling great behavior for her and she'll get it.
