Hi - I am having my reception at a restaurant. Though we have reserved a part of the restaurant for 50 guests, the remainder of the restaurant and the bar are open to the public. It is to be noted that the bar area is located across the restaurant from our reserved area.
I am not against providing alcohol to my guests; however, I am on a limited budget. After reading several posts, I have come to the conclusion that offering only beer and wine is acceptable. Specifically, I was considering only red/white wine caraffes spaced strategically throughout the reserved area and guests could serve themselves. (it is a dinner reception with coffee/tea/soft drinks provided.)
My question is: since the reception is in a public place and the bar is open to the public, is it tacky for guests who desire a mixed drink go the the bar and buy it? Thanks!!

As long as you're providing beverages, and you're not telling guests they must purchase from the bar, I think you're fine.

I agree as long as you are providing plenty of wine if this is the only alcohol you are providing.
