A bit of background:
My fiance has a very large family that speaks mostly Spanish, and a lot of close friends. I have a very small family, English speaking, and one close friend.
In order to have a small wedding that is balanced (not all my fiance's side), we are inviting only parents, grandparents, and siblings, and having an intimate destination wedding. My fiance says he cannot choose a single friend to be his best man, so no friends are invited. He also feels it would be improper to invite friends without inviting the whole extended family. However, my one friend is like a sister, and I really want her to attend. At this point I feel I have to choose between my best friend or a giant wedding (which I don't want).
Question:
Would it be improper to invite my one friend in addition to immediate family? Any suggestions on what you would do? Is there any way in this scenario to have a small wedding and invite my friend without breaking wedding rules?

Dear Smorgan,
Typically, we wouldn't exclude family and close friends for one member of the couple and invite some from the other. However, there are some people who feel like family even more than those who are. Since she is your only friend and like a sister, it seems appropriate for you to include her. Of course your fiance would have to agree to this first.
Best wishes,
