Hi there,

After reading a number of posts on this forum and on a few other websites, I'm coming to understand that it is super important to have a GIA grading report rather than just a report from the jeweler. But, I've also heard that you can only get an independent grading report for a diamond if it is loose and not yet in it's setting. My fiance bought my ring without getting a grading report (grrrr) and I'm wondering if it's too late to get one now? I know he's already made the purchase and we're committed, but I want an independent, honest assessment of the 4c's. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, Lolo1981,

You are right that in order to obtain a GIA grading report, you would need to remove the diamond and have it re-assessed by GIA themselves. They are the only ones that can issue this report.

However, is this option really worth the time, investment, and potentially the risk of damaging your setting to have it done?

In my opinion, no.

There are, however, independent jewelery appraisers that can give you a solid idea of the value and grading of your diamond, without removing the diamond. What you will want to specifically look for is a 'diamond appraiser' and make sure they are certified as such. There are professionals who specialize in just such a thing and are usually 95-99% accurate.

What you don't want is to take it to a regular jewelry store and have them evaluate it, if you are looking for an objective, accurate appraisal.

Lastly, this is my personal opinion only--for your peace of mind, many people shopping for diamonds don't get GIA graded diamonds. As long as you are ultimately happy with the sparkle and beauty of your diamonds and the sentimental value they represent, and have purchased from a reputable diamond, you can decide with your husband whether these steps are necessary.

Thank you!
