My wedding ceremony and reception will be held at a Victorian mansion in the evening. Instead of numbering the tables at the reception, I am considering naming each one after well-known people of the Victorian era, e.g., Sarah Bernhardt, Mendelssohn, and Houdini. Do you think that this will come across as goofy and minimize the elegance of the event? Thank you for your input in advance!

I don't...I think it's cute. B)
When my son got married recently, and he couldn't include his beloved pup in the wedding, we took photos of her holding the table number signs. Guests loved the personality it brought. The couple are a fun loving couple, so it worked for them. Maybe you'll see it and think, "silly". It's all a matter of opinion.
I think if you use a Victorian font and print on paper that matches your wedding colors and theme it can be a nice little touch.
Choose your wedding decor based on what you like.
Maybe some of the pother experts have some more ideas for what you can do with your signs?

I think any unique and personalized idea you can add to your event will just make it more special to you, and to your guests.
My only additional suggestion would be to add description cards to the tables that you name. That way some of your guests who aren't as familiar with the Victorian era, can go from table to table, learning a bit more about it while getting to interact with your friends and family!
