Hello, I got engaged in February. We were to wed in SC (where I spent my teenage years) in May. But a few days ago I finally announced to my FH how unhappy I was to marry him in Charleston. We live in PA together and have for almost a year now. I told him that I would love to wed in Aug here in PA. I have already sent out the save the dates MONTHS ago. With this new wedding I have decided that I would like to just have my parents and siblings only. how do I tell my guest I have changed plans and that I decided to have a much smaller wedding?

Thank you,

Dear Eryca,

That is a tough one, as it is very impolite. And, this is one of the biggest reasons I suggest not sending out the save the dates until all plans are final. But, that doesn't help this issue.

It may be best to plan and host a reception for those no longer invited to the wedding. This means changing the date you mentioned in your save the date though. The reception is held after the wedding.

This is still not polite, but the only somewhat polite way I can think of dealing with your issue.

Please note that the reception must be held within the first year of marriage and it is not a gift giving event. Plus, if you have received any wedding or shower gifts from those not invited to the wedding, these must be returned to the sender.

Best wishes,
