Hi! I am really confused as how to go about having two receptions and would like some help, please =(
My fiance and I come from different churches with about 100-175 members each and are confused as to how, and if, we can have a church reception for our church family, and a private reception for family afterwards? Is this considered proper? My idea is to have a mini-reception for everyone immediately following the ceremony, and then a smaller dinner reception for close friends and family.

Dear Mari,

Yes, this is fine as long as the dinner reception is a small affair with only those very close to you invited. This is common for "open church" weddings where the entire congregation is invited to the wedding. There is usually a cake and beverage reception afterwards and then a small, private dinner later. We just wouldn't want to host a traditional reception, because it would be unfair to the wedding guests.

Best wishes,

When you say traditional reception, what do you mean by that?
Thank you for your help! =)

We often think of the "traditional" reception as: a meal, music, and dancing. This should be just a dinner with family and a (very few) close friends.
