I am getting married in less than seven weeks. My main color is going to be Malibu blue. All three of my bridesmaids are going to be wearing Malibu blue and have already purchased their dresses. My maid of honor has been my best friend for about sixteen years. She says that she does not have the money right now to buy her dress. I want her in my wedding, but am on a budget and do not really want to buy her dress for her. She has thrown out the idea of wearing a black dress. If she were to maybe wear a shawl or something around the waist in my color Malibu blue how would that look? Is there anything else that we could do to make the black dress blend more and just come together without look so standout?
Thanks for any advice.

Can the maid of honor wear black when other bridesmaids are wearing blue?

Hello Heidi. How nice of you to be understanding to the fact that your MOH is experiencing some financial hardship. Sometimes brides will want to honor the MOH and making her stand out. If your MOH is in a different color (i.e. black dress) then it will differentiate her from the bridesmaids. If I were you, I would provide her with malibu blue accessories, her flowers should be blue, and I actually do like the idea of providing her with a malibu blue pashmina. What other colors are you using in your wedding? It would make your palette cohesive if you could incorporate black into your color palette.

What a great idea. You're being very understanding and accommodating for your best fried. This is a breath of fresh air when so many brides have no mercy. Thank you for being so generous.

Heidi! This is a true reflection of your friendship and how you value that bond you have created. Your MOH wearing black will make her stand out.. but in a good way. I would incorporate your Malibu Blue in a hairpiece if her hair is long and can be pinned up, or by adding the Malibu Blue throughout her bouquet, or even in a wonderful bold bib necklace in Malibu Blue. Those subtle hints of your wedding color are certain to give her black dress an incredible wedding day turn around.

To keep the overall look cohesive even though your MOH is wearing black, I would keep all of the bridesmaids bouquets exactly the same. I would definitely provide your MOH with a sash in the same exact color blue to tie the "blue" look together. A pashmina may cause more of a distraction, like she is hiding her black dress, than do it good. If it's a no go with the sash, I'd suggest a malibu blue shoe and the other girls in black shoes so the look is the same just reversed. Best of luck : )
