My dilemma is that my fiancé and I have budgeted our wedding only for people who are either married or in serious long-term relationships. We do not have the budget for couples who are casually dating. How do we let our invited guests know that? Is it feasible to enclose a letter in the invite saying something like: Dearest friends and family, we are looking forward to sharing our special day with you but, due to budget constraints we can not allow ..... or should I post it on our web site? Whatever is permissible, how can I word things without seeming cheap or mean?

It is necessary, from an etiquette standpoint, to invite your guests with a date if they are involved in a serious relationship (i.e. engaged, living together). It is not necessary, although sometime a nice gesture if it's in the budget, to include dates for your single guests casually dating. Your inner envelope of the wedding invitation will be the place to specify the exact names of those invited. If you list Susan Jones and Guest (if you know the guests name then please use the name) on the inner envelope then Miss. Jones understands she is permitted to bring a guest, one guest, especially if you have named her guest. If you list just Susan Jones, Miss Jones will understand that she alone is invited.

Thank you! I have seen invitaions like that before, but I was not quite sure if it was common knowledge that a single name meant no guest.
